You open the passenger door for a friend and spend the next minute scooping receipts, a hoodie and three water bottles off the seat. Then you find a fourth one rolling under the brake pedal.

Here are the habits that keep the front seat, back seat and trunk clutter-free every day, the way people who live in their cars do it.

The gap

From the driver's seat, a pro-kept car is easy to spot: empty floor, empty seats, and every item has one spot it goes back to. Same stuff. Five habits.

Give each zone one job

Most people buy organizers and fill them with whatever is lying around. Pros decide what each zone is for.

  • Driver's area: only things you reach for while driving. Phone, cable, sunglasses.
  • Glove box: papers, owner's manual, a pen.
  • Back seat: people (and the kids' stuff, in a seat-back pocket).
  • Trunk: everything else.

Why: anything that doesn't fit the job is clutter. Easy call.

Card: what belongs in each zone of the car

Keep the driver's floor empty

Everyone else lets bottles slide around the footwell. We keep it bare. Anything loose can roll under a pedal.

Hidden tip: one mat only, clipped to its hooks. NHTSA has warned drivers never to stack a second mat on top of the original, because the retention hooks can't hold the top one and it can slide up and trap the accelerator.

Heavy stuff goes low, forward and in the trunk

The amateur move is tossing groceries or a gym bag on the back seat. The pro move: trunk, heaviest items on the floor, pushed up against the back of the rear seat. Keep the rear shelf clear too.

Why: in a hard stop, loose items keep moving and can hit whoever is in front of them. Consumer Reports gives the same advice for packing a car.

Papers in the glove box, title at home

Most people stuff every document into the glove box. Keep registration and proof of insurance there (or on your phone, where your state allows digital proof).

Hidden tip: the title doesn't belong in the car. It carries your signature, so if the car is stolen, the thief has the paper too. Keep it in a safe spot at home.

The boring one

Not exciting, but it does most of the work: never leave the car empty-handed. Every time you park at home, carry out one thing that doesn't live there, plus the trash. It takes seconds, and clutter never gets the chance to pile up.

Where pros disagree

Ask two drivers about car trash cans and you'll start an argument. Lidded bin, or a bag that gets emptied daily? I'm team bag. Everyone agrees on one thing: trash needs a home, and it's not the door pocket.

Don't copy this

One rideshare habit not to copy: my passenger basket of tissues, mints and spare cables. I drive strangers forty hours a week. You don't. One small pouch covers it.

Start here

Pick the empty-handed rule. It's the smallest habit with the biggest payoff. Swear to you.
