You smooth on sunscreen, start blending foundation, and little grey crumbs roll up along your jaw. The pills are your products clumping together, and you can fix it with the order, the amounts and the wait between steps.

Below: the four causes, a layering order with wait times, and a table worth keeping.

The signal: "does it pill?" comes first now

Brands used to open a sunscreen brief at our lab by asking how it feels. Now the first question is whether it pills under foundation, which tells us people wear sunscreen under makeup every day and expect the layers to get along.

Why sunscreen pills: four chemistry reasons

  • Polymers that stack up. Thickeners such as xanthan gum and carbomer, plus film formers, can roll into balls when two layers meet before they have set.
  • Silicones. Dimethicone and cyclomethicone give that silky slip, but dermatologists name them among the ingredients that can clump on skin.
  • Heavy films underneath. Petrolatum, mineral oil and waxes leave a coating that the next layer slides on instead of settling into.
  • Too much, too fast. Extra product over a still-wet layer is the classic pairing. Dead skin cells join in.

The step order that stops it

  1. Thinnest to thickest. Water-light serum, then cream, then sunscreen last in skin care, then makeup.
  2. Go small underneath. A pea-sized amount of moisturizer is plenty; oily skin can often skip it.
  3. Wait between layers. Dermatologists' advice ranges from about one minute to 20 minutes. My working rule: wait until the surface no longer feels wet or tacky.
  4. Press, don't scrub. Mineral formulas sit on the surface and pill more when rubbed hard, so press foundation on with a sponge or fingertips.

Hidden tip: don't cure pilling by thinning the sunscreen. The Skin Cancer Foundation's guide is a nickel-sized dollop for the face to get the SPF on the label. Cut the serum or cream amount instead.

Hidden tip: read the top of each ingredient list. A silicone-rich layer, with dimethicone near the front, can make a watery product on top struggle to grip. When a pair pills, change one product at a time to find the clash.

What will last, and what will fade

What will last, I'd bet: lighter, thinner sunscreens designed to go under makeup, because they solve a daily problem. At our lab, we now test a new sunscreen over moisturizer and under foundation, not on bare skin alone.

What I expect to fade: very long routines piled under makeup. Every extra layer is one more polymer that might clash. Fewer steps, fewer crumbs.
