Most of us know breakfast matters, then grab a pastry on the way out because nothing at home is ready. A few pantry staples and a little prep ahead fix that.
Here are fifteen fast breakfasts with rough prep times, the staples behind them, and which habits I think will last.
What I'm seeing at the breakfast table
Guests at my B&B used to ask for the pastry basket. Now more ask for eggs, plain yogurt or a jar of oats for the harbour walk. My read: people want breakfast that holds them till lunch, and fast.
One formula for all fifteen
Canada's Food Guide suggests a plate that is half vegetables and fruit, a quarter whole grains and a quarter protein. Fruit plus a grain plus a protein gets breakfast close.
Make ahead: jars and batches
- Overnight oats: rolled oats, milk and fruit in a jar in the fridge. Instant oats soak into mush.
- Chia pudding: chia seeds stirred into milk. Give it a second stir before bed.
- Hard-boiled eggs: Health Canada says they keep up to one week in a sealed container in the fridge.
- Egg muffins: eggs and chopped vegetables baked in a muffin tin. As leftovers, eat within three to four days or freeze.
Two-minute assemblies
- Greek yogurt bowl: berries and nuts. Straining out whey gives Greek yogurt more protein than regular.
- Cottage cheese with peaches or pineapple.
- Whole grain cereal with milk and banana.
- Apple slices with nut butter and cheese.
- A batch egg with fruit and a whole grain cracker.
Five-minute cooked options
- Peanut butter banana toast on whole grain bread.
- Microwave mug eggs: two eggs and a splash of milk.
- Quick oats with frozen berries stirred in.
- Smoothie: frozen fruit, yogurt, spinach and a spoon of oats.
- Tomato or avocado toast with a sliced hard-boiled egg on top.
- Breakfast wrap: tortilla, scrambled egg, salsa and leftover beans.
Hidden tips
Hidden tip: for softer mug eggs, Dairy Farmers of Canada uses 70% power, stirs the edges inward, and stops while they still look a little moist. A covered 30-second rest finishes them.
Hidden tip: boil the older eggs in the carton. The American Egg Board's chef says eggs a week or two old peel more easily.
Frozen fruit is no compromise. Canada's Food Guide calls it just as nutritious as fresh. Pick bags without added sugar.
Built to last, built to fade
What will last: make-ahead protein and fibre, like oat jars and batch eggs. Oats aren't a fad: Health Canada accepted a claim linking oat fibre to lower blood cholesterol.
What won't, I'd bet: the ten-topping smoothie bowl. Lovely in photos, slow to make, and a plain smoothie in a glass does the same job.
Pantry staples to keep
- Rolled oats and quick oats
- Eggs, plain Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, milk
- Frozen berries, bananas, apples
- Peanut or other nut butter, chia seeds, nuts
