Every garment is a character, darling, and most of them have simply been miscast. I run wardrobe for a community theatre in New Orleans, where I dress about forty actors a season out of thrift bins, alterations and sheer stubbornness, after a decade building costumes for touring shows. Here I write about colour and print, statement accessories, vintage tailoring and the one twenty-minute alteration that turns a tired jacket into a leading lady. I sew in the front parlor of a pastel shotgun double in the Marigny, on my grandmother's treadle machine, while my fat orange cat Mardi sleeps on whatever I've just cut. Expect drama. Expect a seam to take in.
