I taught fourth grade in Madison for thirty-one years, and after my husband died I began fostering cats for a local rescue, mostly the shy and under-socialized ones that nobody else quite knows what to do with; by now more than a hundred little ones have passed through my spare room, and I have logged every one of them by name and date in a spiral notebook. I live in an old bungalow near Lake Monona with Oskar, a one-eyed orange tabby who was my first foster fail, and Tilda, along with whoever is currently hiding behind the dryer. Here I write about litter boxes, feeding, quiet spaces and the small things that help a frightened cat decide the room is safe. In my experience, patience does most of the work. The rest is a good book and a little time.
