My husband Angus and I have run a bed-and-breakfast in Halifax's South End for fifteen years, in a Victorian house with five guest rooms, a short walk from the harbour. Before that I was a school secretary for twenty years, and before that a girl in Cape Breton learning preserves and baking from my grandmother. Here I write about breakfast foods, preserves, tea and baking, the way I'd chat across the table to a guest: one tweak at a time, tested on thousands of breakfasts. Expect stories about guests, a proper pot of tea made just off the boil, and jam labelled with the date. Sorcha, our old black Lab, greets everyone at the door. Well, she greets the ones carrying oatcakes first.
