I lecture in history at an Oxford college, teaching early modern and Victorian Britain, and I read a book a week for work and another for pleasure; the two piles overlap more than my colleagues would like. My doctorate was on parish life in nineteenth-century East Anglia, which is more interesting than it sounds, though not by much. Here I recommend history and non-fiction in pairs: one deep, one easy. I try to give the context a reader needs, set out the argument a book is making, and say plainly where it succeeds. I also write about reading habits: why footnotes are a virtue, and why starting with the introduction and conclusion is not cheating. I live in Jericho with my partner Hannah and a staircase of books. The rowing, invariably, comes before the marking.
