How to Clean a Microwave in 5 Minutes With Steam 🍋

A lemon steam method that softens baked-on splatter so it wipes off, a stop-by-stop cleaning route and simple ways to clear smells, with a cheat sheet to save.

You open the microwave and the ceiling is freckled with old soup, baked on hard. Scrubbing it sounds like a proper faff, and it doesn't need to be.

Here's a steam method that softens splatter so it wipes off, a stop-by-stop route, and how to shift smells.

The steam step

  1. Fill a microwave-safe bowl with about a mugful of water and a few lemon slices. A splash of white vinegar works too.
  2. Run it on full power for 3–5 minutes, till the window fogs.
  3. Keep the door shut for two to three minutes more while the steam does the softening.
  4. Lift the bowl out gently with oven gloves; it will be very hot.

Don't overdo the timer. The FDA has had reports of scalds from overheated water erupting out of a cup, and plain water in a very clean cup is the riskiest case.

The route, stop by stop

Door open, bowl out. We go top to bottom, then out the front.

Stop 1: ceiling and walls

Splatter bakes on up here. Wipe it while soft with a damp cloth; mine are cut from old tea towels. Rub stubborn bits with a lemon slice or a thin bicarb paste. Skip scourers and sharp tools, which manuals warn against.

Stop 2: the little panel on the side wall

Many models have a flat plate on one inside wall. That's the waveguide cover, often made of mica.

Hidden tip: never take it off or soak it. Just wipe it with a damp cloth, because Viking's manual warns food left on it can overheat, smoke or even catch fire.

Stop 3: the turntable

Lift out the glass plate and the roller ring. Let the glass cool fully first, since hot glass can crack in cold water. Wash both in warm soapy water, or the dishwasher's top rack if your manual allows.

Stop 4: the spindle in the middle

This is my problem spot. At the café, every spilt soup ends up right here.

Hidden tip: the turntable motor shaft isn't sealed, so mop any puddle here straight away.

Stop 5: the door edges

Wipe the inside of the door and the edges where it meets the body with mild soapy water. Manuals warn against food or cleaner building up on these sealing surfaces, so the door keeps closing properly.

Stop 6: outside and keypad

Wipe with a soapy, well-wrung cloth, and never spray the control panel. Open the door before wiping the keypad, as Viking advises, so you don't start it by accident.

Getting rid of smells

  • Lemon steam: water with lemon peel and juice (Electrolux adds a few cloves), full power for several minutes, cool, wipe.
  • Bicarb boil: Arm & Hammer suggests 2 tablespoons in a cup of water, 5 minutes on high, then 15 minutes standing. Never heat dry bicarb.
  • Air it: after fish or bacon, leave the door open a few minutes so it dries.

The view back

Every stop follows one rule: soften, then wipe, never scrape. If you use it daily, LG suggests a quick wipe every few days and a deeper clean weekly, and because there's no spray bottle anywhere in this routine, it's a little more plastic saved too.
