A washing method for every kind of stuffed animal, from basic plush to giant pillows and toys with electronics or beads, plus drying steps, how often to wash and a cheat sheet to save.
The favorite bunny has been through yogurt, the sandbox and the car floor, and now it smells. You want it clean, but you don't want it coming out of the washer lumpy, bald or missing an eye.
Here is a washing method for each kind of toy, plus drying steps and how often to bother.
Before and after
Before: my youngest's gray bunny, with matted ears, a sticky paw and a smell I'd call minivan. After: soft ears, a clean paw, no smell. It's not new, by the way. The fur is a little flatter.
Rewind: check what's inside
Read the care tag, then check the stuffing and extras:
- Lights, music or a breathing motion: never in water. Surface clean only.
- Foam beads, rice or beans: water ruins these fillings. Spot clean.
- Glued eyes, glitter, sequins, weak seams: a wash cycle can pull them apart.
- Plain polyester stuffing, sewn-on parts: usually fine in the machine.
Washing method by toy type
| Toy | Method |
|---|---|
| Basic plush | Machine: mesh bag, delicate, cold |
| Giant pillow plush | Hand wash or spot clean |
| Electronics inside | Damp cloth on the surface only |
| Beads or pellets | Spot clean only |
| Old or fragile | Spot clean, gently |
Machine
One toy per mesh bag or knotted pillowcase. Delicate cycle, cold water, mild detergent. Skip fabric softener, which clumps stuffing. Warm water can soften the glue on seams and decorations.
Hand wash
Soak in cold, soapy water and rub dirty spots with your fingers. Rinse until the suds are gone, then squeeze. Wringing can bend it out of shape.
Spot clean
Mix about a teaspoon of mild detergent into a cup of cold water. Test a hidden spot for color first. Wipe with a white cloth so no dye transfers, then blot with a dry one.
Drying without the lumps
- Roll the toy in a dry towel and press. Swap towels as they soak through.
- Air dry, turning it every few hours. Big toys can take overnight or longer.
- Skip the clothes dryer. Heat can shrink, mat and clump the filling.
- Once dry, fluff the fur with a soft brush or an old toothbrush.
Hidden tips
Run a second cold rinse. Suds can hide in thick stuffing, and an extra rinse clears them.
The freezer needs longer than you think. The usual dust mite advice is 24 hours in a bag in the freezer. In a Wright State University study, over half the mites were still alive six days after 24 hours at -15°C (5°F). The researchers suggested two days, then a rinse.
How often?
Allergy-friendly toy programs suggest about once a month for toys that sleep in the bed. For dust mite allergies, allergy guides use hot washes of at least 130°F, if the tag allows.
Save this: stuffed animal washing
| Step | Do this |
|---|---|
| Check | Tag, filling, electronics, glue |
| Basic plush | Mesh bag, delicate, cold |
| Big, beaded, electronic | Hand wash or spot clean |
| Rinse | Second cold rinse |
| Dry | Towel roll, air dry, no dryer |
| Finish | Brush the fur |
| Mites | Freezer two days, then rinse |
| How often | About monthly for bed toys |

If your toy looks like my before, don't grab the hot cycle. Check what's inside first.
