How to Hand Wash Delicates Without Damage

Three quick questions about fabric, color and drying that tell you how to hand wash wool knits, silk and lace so they keep their shape, plus a cheat sheet to save.

You pull a soft sweater, a silk top or a lace bra out of the sink, and it comes out stretched, fuzzy or a size smaller than it went in. I'll say it plain: I shrank my daughter's favorite wool sweater by treating it like a work shirt, and she still brings it up.

There's no one right way to hand wash delicates. Three questions about the piece in your hand pick the method, and the drying step is where most shape gets lost.

Question one: what is it made of?

Read the fiber line on the care tag. It splits the job three ways.

  • If it's wool or cashmere knit: lukewarm water, around 30°C (86°F), turned inside out, a 10-minute soak, then a lukewarm rinse and a final cold one. That's Woolmark's routine. Press, never rub. Rubbing wet wool is how it felts and shrinks.
  • If it's silk: keep it quick. Persil says lukewarm water, mild detergent, five minutes max.
  • If it's lace or lingerie: lukewarm water, a little delicate detergent, about 15 minutes, swished gently. Skip fabric softener, which lingerie maker Aubade says weakens the elastic in lace.

Hidden tip: check the jug for the word "biological." Biological detergents carry enzymes that break down protein stains, and wool and silk are protein fibers. The damage shows up as small random holes several washes later, so nobody blames the detergent. Use one labeled for wool or delicates.

Question two: does the color run?

Dab a hidden seam with a wet white cloth first.

  • If the cloth stays white: wash it as above.
  • If color comes off: stop. Persil advises against washing it at home, by hand or machine.

Hidden tip: for silk, add a splash of distilled white vinegar to the cool rinse water. Persil suggests it to lift leftover soap.

Question three: how will it dry?

First, get the water out. Lay the piece on a clean towel, roll them up together and press. Never wring or twist, which pulls delicates out of shape.

  • If it's a knit: dry it flat on a dry towel, out of the sun. Woolmark warns a wet sweater on a hanger stretches under the weight of its own water.
  • If it's silk: flat on a towel or on a hanger, out of direct sun, which can fade it. Never the dryer.
  • If it's a lace bra: reshape the cups by hand. Padded ones dry flat. Unpadded lace can go on a line. No dryer. Heat distorts and shrinks lace.

Why did the sweater refuse to hang out? It didn't want to get stretched too thin.

When to skip all this

If the tag shows a crossed-out wash tub or says dry clean only, believe it. Same for anything that failed the color test. Those go to a pro.
