My commute is 6.2 miles each way, about 28 minutes, mostly on a protected lane I helped plan. I've worked in San Diego's transportation department for nine years, designing bike infrastructure that I then ride myself. I started bike commuting after a car crash on the freeway in my twenties, and I'd argue that's a more honest reason than most. Here I write about cycling, commuting gear and bike safety: lights, panniers, rain covers, routes and the numbers behind them. I've timed it. Expect spare lights and backup plans, because redundancy is cheap. I live in a North Park condo with Marco, our daughter Kim and bikes hung in the hallway. The surfboard gets a wall. The car mostly gets ignored.
