I am Ingrid, and I have taught piano from my home studio in Duluth for twenty-two years, to children and to adults. I grew up in a Swedish-American family in northern Minnesota and studied piano performance at a state university. My grandmother's upright piano sits in our front room above Lake Superior, and Kanel, our old elkhound, lies under the bench during lessons. Here I write about pianos and keyboards, benches, metronomes, and above all practice habits. I give practice in minutes. Fifteen minutes a day, played slowly with a relaxed wrist, will teach you more than a long session on Saturday. Many of my students are adults who apologize for starting late. There is no need. Progress feels slow at first, and that is normal. Some days, play just for pleasure.
