How to Hang Curtains Without Drilling 🪟

Seven no-drill rules for hanging curtains with tension rods, tap-in brackets or adhesive hooks, plus measuring tips for a straight, neat finish and a cheat sheet to save.
The lease says no holes, the window says no privacy, and the curtains are still in their bag. Put the drill down; there are three solid no-drill ways up, run on seven house rules.
Below: the right no-drill method for your window, measuring that keeps it straight, and a summary card at the end.
Match the method to your window
| Method | Best on | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Tension rod | Inside a flat window frame | Long spans can sag |
| Tap-in brackets | Wooden window trim | Not for MDF, PVC, metal or oak trim |
| Adhesive rod hooks | Smooth painted walls, tile, glass | Light rods and short windows only |
Tap-in brackets grip the casing corners with small built-in pins; the wall stays untouched.
Rule 1: Measure three times, trust the smallest
Measure the inside width at the top, middle and bottom, and use the narrowest number, because old frames are rarely square (my 1920s fourplex has opinions) and a rod sized to the widest spot will spin loose at the narrow one.
Rule 2: Tension needs a little extra length
Spring rods: set them about 1 to 2 inches longer than the opening, compress, and let them push out. Twist rods: extend until both caps touch, then add about a half-turn.
Stop there. Overtightening can dent drywall.
Rule 3: Grip beats force
Hidden tip: slip a small square of thin rubber shelf liner under each end cap. More grip, no marks.
Then tug down firmly at the center. Slides? Reset it rather than cranking harder.
Rule 4: Weigh the whole setup
Adhesive hook ratings cover the rod and fabric together. Step on a bathroom scale holding everything, then subtract yourself. Wide windows usually need a center support bracket too.
Rule 5: Prep the wall like it matters
Wipe the spot with isopropyl rubbing alcohol, not household cleaner. Press each strip for about 30 seconds, then wait as long as the pack says before loading. Fresh paint? 3M says wait seven days.
Rule 6: Go wide and hover the hem
Total curtain width should be about two to two and a half times the window's width; less looks like it's holding its breath. Aim floor-length hems about half an inch above the floor, measured from where the rod actually sits.
I mark hooks with a laser level. A phone level app works too.
Rule 7: Leave the way you came in
Hidden tip: to remove an adhesive strip, pull the tab slowly straight down along the wall, stretching it a foot or more. Pulling it toward you can snap the tab; rushing can damage paint. Snapped anyway? Saw behind it with dental floss.
My confession
I skip Rule 4 for linen panels I love too much to weigh. Ottoman, my greyhound, leaves the room when a rod creaks.
Cheat sheet: save this
| Rule | Do this |
|---|---|
| 1. Measure | Three spots; use the smallest |
| 2. Tension | Spring +1–2 in; twist +½ turn |
| 3. Grip | Shelf liner under caps; tug test |
| 4. Weight | Rod + curtains under the rating |
| 5. Prep | Alcohol wipe; 7 days after paint |
| 6. Size | 2–2.5× width; hem ½ in up |
| 7. Remove | Pull the tab slowly straight down |

Keep the rules that fit and write your own Rule 8. Your walls will thank you.
