How to Clean Tarnished Jewelry at Home Without Ruining It ✨

A cleaning guide by material for plated gold, sterling silver, crystal and pearl jewelry, with what to use, what to avoid and how often, plus a cheat sheet to save.

You pull out a favorite bracelet and it has gone dark, or a gold-tone bangle shows a coppery patch where it rubbed your wrist. Grab whatever is under the sink and the real damage starts.

Here is a cleaning guide by material: plated, sterling silver, crystal and pearl, with what to use, what to avoid and how often.

Why home cleaning goes wrong

At the shop, every estate-sale jewelry box I sort tells me how the last owner cleaned, with gold tone scrubbed down to gray metal, rhinestones gone foggy from the back, and pearls with a chalky spot where the perfume landed. Same tarnish. Wrong fix. Each material wants its own habit.

Plated gold: soap, never scrub

Most people reach for toothpaste or baking soda. Pros use a few drops of mild dish soap in warm water, a soft brush, a quick rinse, and a soft cloth to dry right away.

Why: plating is a thin coat over another metal. Abrasives wear through it, and once the base metal shows, only replating fixes it. Skip bleach, chlorine and ammonia too.

Sterling silver: let chemistry do the work

The amateur move is hard rubbing. The pro move: line a bowl with aluminum foil, add baking soda and a little salt, pour in very hot water, and lay the silver so it touches the foil.

Why: tarnish is silver sulfide. The aluminum pulls the sulfur away and turns tarnish back into silver.

  • Expect a matte finish. Buff lightly.
  • Keep silver-plated pieces out. Any tarnish removal can wear plating.
  • No pearls or glued stones in the bath.

Crystal and rhinestones: keep them dry

Everyone else soaks. We wipe with a soft, lint-free cloth, then use a barely damp cotton swab on the front only.

Why: many crystals are glued in and foil-backed. Water that creeps behind a stone dulls the foil for good. Swarovski's care advice also says to avoid water and sonic cleaners.

Pearl and mother-of-pearl: wipe after every wear

Mother-of-pearl is the same nacre as pearls, so treat both alike. GIA warns that acids and chemicals harm pearls, including hairspray, perfume, cosmetics and even sweat.

  • Wipe with a very soft cloth after each wear.
  • Now and then, use warm, soapy water.
  • Strung pearls: let the string dry completely, lying flat, before wearing.
  • Pearls go on last, after perfume and hairspray.

Hidden tip: your jewelry box may be the culprit

Rubber bands, rubber gloves and wool felt release sulfur gases that darken silver, say conservators at the Canadian Conservation Institute. Damp air speeds it up.

Hidden tip: store sterling in a sealed zip-top plastic bag, away from rubber and the steamy bathroom.

The boring one

The secret nobody wants to hear: dry everything completely and store pieces apart. A damp piece in a crowded box undoes any cleaning, and pearls scratch against harder gems.

Where pros disagree

Ask two jewelers about polishing cloths on plated gold: two answers. Some say a light pass lifts tarnish. Others say the polish strips plating. Both agree a cloth can't fix plating that is already worn through.

Don't copy this

Skip the ultrasonic cleaner. GIA says pearls, shell and coated or heat-sensitive gems should stay out of one, and the vibration can shake stones loose.

Steal this first

If you steal one habit, make it the soft-cloth wipe after wearing. Seconds of work, and sweat and lotion never get to sit.
