You open a new serum and want it on your face straight away, not on your arm for a week. One customer at my counter put the charge plainly: "Patch testing is a week I'll never get back."
So, to court. Below: where to test, how long to wait, and how to tell irritation from a real reaction.
The charge
On trial: the home patch test, accused of being slow, fussy and no better than a guess.
Case for the patch test
- Exhibit A: allergies arrive late. An allergic reaction usually appears 24 to 72 hours after contact; a quick dab that looks fine after an hour proves little.
- Exhibit B: it risks your arm, not your face. A reaction on a small patch of arm is a nuisance; across the cheeks and eyelids, it is a miserable week.
How to test (American Academy of Dermatology method)
- Pick a coin-sized spot on the inner arm or elbow bend, where it won't be rubbed off.
- Apply your normal amount, twice a day, for 7 to 10 days.
- Hidden tip: wash-off products count too. Leave a cleanser on for about five minutes, then rinse.
- One product at a time, or you won't know which was guilty.
- No redness, itching or swelling by the end? Reasonable to start.
Case against the patch test
- Exhibit C: some products sting anyway. Retinol and glycolic acid can cause mild, temporary irritation, so a pink patch is not always a "never".
- Exhibit D: a clear arm is no lifetime guarantee. Allergy can develop over time, even to something you have used before.
Cross-examination: irritation or allergy?
The defence answers Exhibit C: learn to read the spot.
| Sign | Irritation | Allergy |
|---|---|---|
| Feels like | Burning, stinging | Itch |
| When | Soon after applying | Usually 1 to 3 days later |
| Where | Stays on the spot | Can spread beyond it |
Hidden tip: an allergen can travel on your fingers. If your eyelids itch after you start a new hand or face product, suspect that product too.
Either way, wash it off gently and stop. See a pharmacist or GP if it is severe or won't settle.
Verdict
For sensitive skin, eczema, past reactions, or anything fragranced or strongly active, the patch test is not guilty. For a plain product you have used for years, the court is lenient. Patch test first whenever the formula is new.
The verdict depends on who you are, and now you know which side of the courtroom you sit on.
