Tailoring read with an architect's eye: proportion, structure and cloth weight in grams per metre.

Sobre Theo Whitfield

I am an architect at a London practice that restores Victorian buildings, and I find it difficult to look at a jacket without looking for its frame. My grandfather was a cutter in a Leeds clothing factory; he taught me the vocabulary of tailoring long before I learned the vocabulary of buildings. Here I write about tailoring, quiet luxury, watches and proportion: why the canvas in a chest matters, why one 300-gram cloth outlasts three thin ones, and why a modest suit cut correctly beats a fine one cut badly. I live in a converted warehouse flat in Bermondsey with my partner, Rafael, and a great deal of north light. My flannel suit is nine years old; it has aged better than several façades I have worked on.
