I'm Holly, an art teacher at a Burlington high school, where I started the sewing unit and help teenagers make their first bags. I learned to quilt from my grandmother in northern Vermont, and her hand-pieced quilt still hangs on my sewing-room wall above the garage. Here I write about fabric, notions and tools, and beginner projects you can finish by dinnertime. I believe in starting small, truly. A pillowcase before clothing. Quilting cotton before anything slippery. Press as you go, because pressing matters more than a fancy machine. If your stitching wanders, that's all right. I live just outside Burlington with my husband Ben, our two kids, and Maple, a golden retriever who naps on the scrap pile. Every March, the sewing waits while we boil sap.
