10 Laundry Mistakes That Ruin Clothes (and How to Fix Them)

Ten common laundry mistakes that shrink, fade or wear out clothes, each with a quick fix, plus a cheat sheet to save.
You pull a favorite shirt out of the dryer and it's smaller, duller, or fuzzy with pills. Most of that damage comes from a few small steps in an ordinary load.
Below: ten common laundry mistakes, taken apart layer by layer, each with a quick fix.
Layer 1: the care label
1. Skipping it. Federal rules make clothing makers list a safe cleaning method and warn about any step that could cause harm. Fix: read it before the first wash.
Hidden tip: the dots are temperatures. On the washtub, one dot means cold, two means warm. On the dryer square, one dot is low heat, three is high, and a solid black circle means no heat.
Layer 2: the prep
2. Open zippers, full pockets. Zipper teeth snag nearby clothes, and one tissue turns a dark load into a snow globe. Fix: empty, zip, hook.
3. Darks right side out. Drum rubbing wears the outer face first. Fix: turn jeans, darks and printed tees inside out.
Layer 3: the washer
4. Too much detergent. A Consumer Reports laundry expert says most people use about twice what they need, and the extra leaves residue. Fix: measure, and start small.
5. A stuffed drum. Packed clothes can't move, so soapy water can't reach them. Fix: leave room to tumble, and split a big pile into two loads.
6. Hot water for everything. Energy Star says cold generally cleans well unless the stain is oily, and Levi's suggests cold to limit shrinking and fading. Fix: cold by default.
7. Softener on towels and gym clothes. Consumer Reports says it can cut towel absorbency and workout gear's wicking. Fix: skip it on those loads.
8. A wet load left sitting. Damp clothes in a closed drum go sour. Fix: move them promptly, and rewash if they smell musty. Leave a front-loader's door ajar afterward so it dries out.
Layer 4: the dryer
9. Drying a stain. Heat sets it for good. Fix: check stained spots before the dryer. Still there? Treat and wash again.
10. Too much heat. Over-drying wears fabric and adds to shrinking. Fix: low heat or sensor dry, hang jeans and stretchy pieces, and clean the lint filter every load.
The part nobody checks
University of Tennessee Extension calls the care label "in effect, a care warranty."
Hidden tip: if you followed the label and the dye still ran, take it back to the store. That problem is the maker's responsibility.
With three teenagers and a Lab who sheds on every clean load, I'll say it plain: that little tag saves more hoodies than any fancy additive. Why did the sock leave the dryer? It needed some space.
Save this: the laundry cheat sheet
