The lead comes off, your dog bolts down the hall, and the floor gets a trail of brown prints before the door is even shut. Stopping that happens on the doormat, not with the mop.

Below: a five-step doorstep routine, the towel and wipe words decoded, then a summary worth saving.

The doorstep routine

  1. Stop at the mat. Lead stays on until all four paws are done.
  2. Wipe off the worst. Light dirt: a damp cloth. Proper mud: a warm, soapy cloth.
  3. Part the toes. Spread them and check between the pads for grit, cuts or grass seeds.
  4. Dry properly. Press the towel round each foot, then between the toes. Trapped moisture is what yeast likes.
  5. Treat, then release. The reward comes after paw four, never before.

Bruce (scruffy terrier, mud magnet) used to fight me on this. So I touched a paw for one second, gave a treat, and stopped. Best Friends Animal Society suggests exactly that slow, treat-paired handling for paw-shy dogs. Now he stands on the mat with one foot already up, staring at my bum bag like it owes him money (it usually does).

Label words, translated

  • Microfibre: synthetic fibre finer than one denier, so fine it grabs water fast.
  • GSM: grams per square metre, how dense the fabric is. Higher usually holds more water, but takes longer to dry itself.
  • Pet-safe wipe: made for dog skin, which has a different pH from ours. Dogs lick their paws, so the wipe's residue ends up inside them.
  • Paw washer: a cup lined with soft silicone bristles. A little water in, twist the paw, dab dry.
  • PVA (synthetic chamois): a spongy plastic sheet. Wring it out and it soaks up again.

What counts, what's fluff

Worth reading: microfibre, GSM, pet-safe. Pure fluff: "premium", "luxury", "ultra-soft".

Nobody measures those.

False friends

"Absorbent" and "quick-dry" sound like cousins. They're not. A thick, high-GSM towel holds plenty of water โ€” then stays damp on the hook for ages (ask my hallway).

"Chamois" is two things. Real chamois is sheep leather. Synthetic chamois is PVA foam.

The word that oversells

"Super absorbent". Sounds like a measurement โ€” there's no number behind it. Read the material and GSM instead.

Hidden tip: never wash a microfibre towel with fabric softener or dryer sheets. The waxy coating clogs the fibres and the towel stops drinking. Plain detergent only.

Hidden tip 2: for longer-haired dogs, the AKC suggests a professional trim between the pads. Less fur, fewer mud clumps, quicker drying.

Translate this one

"Premium ultra-soft microfibre paw towel, 400 GSM, super absorbent." Plain English: a fine synthetic towel of middling weight. The rest is decoration.
