How to Clean Grout Without Scrubbing All Day 🌿

A soak-first method that lets oxygen bleach do the hard work on grout, what to keep away from it, and the habits that stop it darkening again, with a cheat sheet to save.
You scrub one grout line until your wrist aches, and it's still grey. My mum tried that in Hove with an old toothbrush and gave up halfway.
Here's a soak-first method that lets the cleaner do the hard part, plus the habits that keep grout pale for longer.
Why grout goes dark
Most grout is cement-based, and cement is porous. Every time you walk across the floor your feet grind a little more dirt into those tiny pores, and the steam from each shower feeds mildew, so the grime ends up living inside the joint rather than on top of it. Epoxy grout isn't porous like this and rarely needs a deep clean.
The soak, don't scrub method
- Wet the grout. Wipe off loose dirt, then wet the lines with warm water.
- Test a hidden corner. Makers all say it. Stop if coloured grout lightens unevenly.
- Apply oxygen bleach. Mix the powder (sodium percarbonate) with water as the label says, thicker for grout. Work in small sections so it never dries.
- Walk away. OxiClean's grout guidance gives 5 to 30 minutes.
- Brush once, gently. A thin, stiff nylon brush that fits the joint. Never wire: it scratches glaze and gouges grout.
- Rinse and dry. Rinse well with cool water, then towel it dry.
Hidden tip: the waiting is the scrubbing. If a stain won't budge, give the paste longer before you add elbow grease.
What to leave in the cupboard
- Vinegar and lemon, used regularly. HG warns acids weaken and discolour cement grout over time. Vinegar on glass, yes; on grout, no.
- Any acid near marble or limestone. It etches the stone for good.
- Bleach mixed with anything. Health Canada warns that bleach plus vinegar or ammonia cleaners makes toxic gases.
For everyday wipes, a pH-neutral cleaner or diluted washing-up liquid is plenty.
Habits that keep it pale
- Squeegee after showering. Less water left for grout to soak up.
- Fan on, or window open. The US EPA links shower mould to poor ventilation and suggests indoor humidity below 60 percent.
- Little and often. A weekly wipe beats a rescue job, same as at the café.
Hidden tip: do the water-drop test. Grout maker Custom Building Products says to drip a little water on sealed grout; if it soaks in, add a fresh coat of sealer. If it beads, you're sorted.
Save this: your grout cheat sheet
