You walk into a room and something is off: stale, a bit sour, maybe drain-ish. You light a candle or spray something floral, and an hour later the smell is back with a perfume on top.

Here is how to track down where a smell is really coming from, then clear it with airing, washing and bicarb, plus a cheat sheet to keep.

Why spraying doesn't close the case

Air fresheners cover a smell; they don't remove what makes it. UMass Amherst's health and safety office links them to higher indoor levels of volatile organic compounds, which can irritate eyes, nose and throat. Its alternatives: remove the source and let more air through.

Hidden tip: your nose is a biased witness. Researchers at the Monell Chemical Senses Center say that for many odours, you notice them less after just one or two sniffs. So judge a room the moment you walk in, not after sitting in it, and ask someone who doesn't live with you to have a sniff.

Round up the usual suspects

Question them one at a time, in this order.

SuspectClueAlibi test
BinSour, rottingEmpty it, wash the bin itself
FabricsStale, pet, cookingSniff cushions, curtains, pet beds up close
Damp, mouldMusty, earthyLook behind furniture and in window corners
Dry drainSewer-likeSmell is strongest at a sink or shower you rarely use
FridgeSour, cheesyCheck the back of shelves and the door seals

A musty smell with no mould in sight still counts. UK government guidance on damp notes it may mean mould behind a surface, such as wallpaper, panelling or carpet.

The case of the back-room pong

Ours was a stale, drain-ish smell in the back room. Pickle's bed looked proper guilty, so it went in the wash. Clean bed, same smell. Sorry, Pickle.

The break came when Sam got down to fix a skirting board and said it was strongest by the little sink we hardly ever use. The culprit was the U-bend, all along.

Hidden tip: a drain can dry out. The curved pipe under a sink, shower or floor drain holds a little water that blocks sewer gas. In a drain nobody uses, it evaporates. A cup or two of water refills the seal. A US water utility suggests running every drain at least once a month, and adding a little mineral oil on top in rarely used ones to slow evaporation. Skip cooking oil, which can go rancid. If the smell stays after refilling, a plumber should check for a leak.

Clear the air: airing, washing, bicarb

  • Air it with a cross-breeze. Open windows or doors on opposite sides of the room, or the house, so air flows through. After a steamy shower or cooking, open the window wide for a short time rather than a crack all day.
  • Wash what soaks it up. Cushion covers, throws, curtains and pet bedding hold smells. Wash them as the care label allows.
  • Bicarb the carpet. Arm & Hammer's own tip: once the area is dry, sprinkle bicarb, leave it 15 minutes, then vacuum.
  • Bicarb the bin and fridge. Sprinkle a little between layers of rubbish, and keep an open box in the fridge.
