I'm a structural engineer who designs bridges for a consultancy in Leeds, and most evenings, after bedtime, I build something rather smaller. I built with bricks as a boy, gave it up as a teenager, and came back to it when Harry turned five; now I build with Harry and Alfie, and on my own once they're asleep. Here I write about building toys, which sets suit which ages, and storage for bricks, with piece counts and build hours per session. I'm afraid I'm firm on sorting by colour first. Our loft in Headingley holds a wall of labelled sorting trays and a model railway. Claire is allergic to fur, so no pets; loose bricks underfoot are quite enough of a hazard as it is.
