How to Stop Sneakers From Smelling: 7 Fixes That Work 👟

Seven simple rules for drying, cleaning and wearing sneakers so the smell stops for good, with a cheat sheet to save.
You kick off your sneakers after a long day and the smell gets there before the shoe hits the floor. It happens to everybody, and it's not dirt, it's sweat plus bacteria.
Below: my 7 house rules for fresh pairs, the reason behind each, plus a summary table at the end.
My bedroom is walled in shoe boxes, so these rules were earned!
Why sneakers smell
The average foot has over 250,000 sweat glands. Bacteria on your skin and in your shoe feed on that sweat and leave a sour, vinegar-like smell. They love heat, damp and dark. A sneaker is all 3.
So every rule keeps the inside dry and clean.
The 7 rules
Rule 1: Never wear the same pair 2 days running
A shoe needs a full day off to dry out. The NHS and dermatologists agree. Rotate 2 pairs.
Rule 2: Insoles come out after a sweaty day
Pull 'em and let air hit both sides. Still smelly? Cleveland Clinic suggests a light spray of kitchen disinfectant with ethanol, then 24 hours to dry.
Rule 3: Socks every time, fresh every time
Going sockless is the fastest way to a stinky pair, and I don't care how clean the colorway looks with bare ankles, the shoe pays for it every single time you skip the socks. Wash socks after every wear.
Hidden tip: polyester or nylon doesn't automatically wick sweat. The American Academy of Dermatology says to look for the words "moisture wicking" on the label. Bamboo wicks on its own.
Rule 4: Baking soda on the off day
A spoonful in each shoe, left at least 24 hours, as Nike suggests.
Rule 5: Clean feet, dry toes
Wash your feet at least once a day and dry between the toes.
Rule 6: Antiperspirant on the soles at night
Hidden tip: regular underarm antiperspirant works on feet too, a Cleveland Clinic podiatrist says. The AAD's routine for antiperspirants is bedtime, on dry skin. Less sweat, less bacteria food!
Rule 7: Wash by hand, dry at room temperature
Nike doesn't recommend the washing machine, and dryer heat can deform shoes. Warm water, a little mild soap, a soft brush, laces and insoles washed separately. Stuff with crumpled newspaper, air dry at room temperature.
Never on the radiator.
The rule I break
Confession: Rule 1 goes out the window every time I cop a fresh colorway. 2 days straight in the new pair? Obviously. Then it gets the day off. Mostly.
Keep just one? Rule 1. Drying time does the heavy lifting.
Dry shoes don't stink.
