How to Unclog a Drain Without Harsh Chemicals

A stop-by-stop walk through a slow sink, tub and kitchen drain using a plunger, a hand snake and hot tap water, with two lesser-known tricks and a cheat sheet to save.
The sink drains like it is thinking it over, and the shower leaves you standing in a puddle. Here lies the jug of harsh drain cleaner, retired from under the sink and survived by a plunger, a hand snake and hot tap water.
This is a tour of a house's drains, stop by stop, with what to do at each one.
The doorway: why tools beat the jug
We're at the bathroom door. Five stops, ending at the kitchen sink.
When Consumer Reports tested drain cleaners, most chemical ones were not very effective, and the crystal types that did better were even more dangerous. Mechanical tools were safer and quicker. That's the point.
Stop 1: the bathroom sink
Most slow sinks are hair and soap on the stopper. Pull it first. Many twist counterclockwise. Some lift straight out.
Then plunge with a flat cup plunger, not the flanged toilet one.
- Run water until it covers half the rubber cup.
- Seat the cup flat over the drain.
- Push down, pull up sharply, keep the seal.
- Repeat a few times. Pop it off. Watch.
Hidden tip: stuff a wet rag into the overflow hole near the rim first. That hole is an air leak. Leave it open and you push air, not the clog.
Stop 2: under the sink
Open the vanity. Behind the drainpipe sits a small nut with a horizontal rod running into it. That rod works the pop-up stopper.
Hidden tip: stopper won't come out? Loosen that nut by hand and slide the rod back. Now it lifts right out. Clean it, drop it in, feed the rod through its slot, hand-tighten.
Still slow? The curved pipe below is the P-trap. Bucket under, towels down, loosen the slip nuts, empty and rinse it.
Stop 3: the tub and shower
To your right, the tub. Hair, every time. Remove the drain cover and pull out what you can reach with gloves on.
Plunge it like the sink, overflow plugged. Need more reach? Grab a hand snake:
- Feed the cable slowly into the main drain, not the overflow.
- At resistance, crank clockwise.
- Pull it out slowly over a bucket.
- Run hot water to test.
Never force the cable. Forcing it can damage the pipe or pack the clog deeper. Toilets need a toilet auger, not this.

Stop 4: the kettle question
Hot tap water helps. Boiling water is another story. PVC drain pipe is commonly rated to 140°F, and water boils at 212°F. Plastic pipe under your sink means skip the kettle.
Stop 5: the problem corner
The double kitchen sink, where grease sets up like mortar. Consumer Reports calls congealed grease one of the main causes of drain backups. Wipe it into the trash.
Plunging one basin? Plug the other one. An open drain is lost pressure.
One hard rule. If chemical cleaner is already in there, do not plunge. Drano labels say never to plunge during or after use, because product may still be in the drain. Splash that and it is your eyes.
The view back
Looking back down the hall, the order is plain — stopper, plunger, trap, snake. Prep comes first like on every job I run. Towels, bucket, gloves, glasses.
Several drains backing up at once, or a clog that keeps returning, means a plumber. That's past a hand snake.
Cheat sheet: unclog a drain without chemicals
| Step | Do this |
|---|---|
| Stopper | Pull it, clean the hair |
| Stuck stopper | Loosen the nut under the sink |
| Plunger | Cup type, water half up the cup |
| Seal | Wet rag in overflow or other basin |
| P-trap | Bucket under, empty it |
| Snake | Slow in, crank, slow out |
| Hot water | Tap hot, not boiling |
| Grease | Trash, never the sink |
| Chemicals in drain | Do not plunge |
| Many drains slow | Call a plumber |

Next slow drain, walk the same route: seal it, start up top, work down.
