Acerca de Rita Alvarez

For thirty years I have restored silent and early sound films at an archive in Los Angeles, coaxing reels that smell of vinegar back to life frame by frame, and I come to the work honestly, as the granddaughter of a movie palace usherette whose ticket stubs I still keep. Here I write about classic films, box sets, projectors and home cinema, always with a little history and usually with a double bill, because two films side by side teach more than a semester of lectures. I will argue, politely and often, for original aspect ratios, black bars and all, and for keeping physical box sets, since what streams today may be gone tomorrow. I live in a Pasadena Craftsman with my husband Gene, my mother, two desert tortoises named Reel and Splice, and a small screening room where the garage used to be.
