Hand tools, testers and site life from a Belfast apprentice sparky. What's worth buying, and when to call a pro.
Acerca de Ian Doyle
I'm Ian. Third-year apprentice electrician in Belfast. Started late, mind. Left school at 18, did a few years in a warehouse, then signed up at 26. Now I split my weeks between college and building sites around the city. I got into tools fixing bikes with my granda as a wee lad, and I still have my first voltage tester in a padded case. On here it's hand tools, testers, workwear and the kit an apprentice actually needs, plus site stories. Yes, I was sent to the van for tartan paint. Fair play to them. The serious bit is simple. Test before you touch, every time, and anything inside a consumer unit is a job for a qualified electrician. I live off the Ormeau Road with my girlfriend Aoife, still lobbying the landlord for a dog. That's your lot.
